West Briton newspaper article

TWO men are now training in earnest as they prepare for a marathon charity bike ride.

Andrew Miners, of Helston, and Bodmin's Mike Fitzpatrick, are to cycle from Land's End to John o' Groats and back again over, they hope, 10 days in June to raise money for Cornwall's new children's hospice, through the Children's Hospice South West Precious Lives Appeal.

Their aim is to make at least £20,000 through sponsorship and donations.

The ride was Andrew's idea; he works for Cornwall Council, based at Scorrier, and said the inspiration came from travelling around Cornwall.

"I saw all the stories about the hospice," he said.

"My wife Lorraine and I have two children (  five and three) and I saw what people were doing and it brings a lump to my throat.

"I threw down the gauntlet, and I said ' let's do it'."

Mike, who works for Travis Perkins Builders in Wadebridge, became involved when his partner, Carrie Stone, who works for A Plant in Bodmin, heard about Andrew's bid. "I was 'volunteered' by my partner," he quipped. "I thought it was a good idea."

Andrew has some experience of competitive cycling: "I used to ride semi-professionally," he said.

Mike has never raced but admitted: "I just enjoy riding."

Anyone else who can help or support them can visit www.chsw.org.uk/andy2010, or www.justgiving.com/thereandback2010 where Andrew will be writing a daily blog.
